Shovel Knight had its fifth birthday last week, and among the many, many throwback platformers to come out before or since, it remains one of the finest examples of how to refine classic game design for modern sensibilities. Developer Yacht Club Games took the occasion to announce a new sales milestone for the constantly-expanding game.
Shovel Knight has sold 2.5 million copies across all platforms since launch. The titular knight has also cameoed in 25 other games ranging from Runbow and Brawlhalla to Nintendo’s own Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In a celebratory blog on the official site, the developers run down plenty of fun development tidbits and anecdotes about features that almost made it to the game.

The new numbers mean about a half-million copies of Shovel Knight have sold since Yacht Club last reported in back in April 2018. At that time, PC constituted a slim majority of total sales, followed closely by 3DS and Switch. The developers haven’t detailed any shifts in the platform rankings since, but it’s safe to expect to suggest many of the new sales occurred on Nintendo’s newest platform, given how successful indies have been there.
