Dubbed ‘Analog,’ the sponsored lens is free to use and “designed to celebrate the imperfections, mistakes, and happy accidents found when shooting with film.” This special-edition Snapchat lens will be around for a month starting today, and offers two different filters that can be applied to either stills or video: Film creates the light leaks, glares, and distortions that can occur on film Prism creates a refracted, double effect Here’s a short demo of each of the two “looks” offered by the Analog lens: VSCO is no doubt hoping that a few of Snapchat’s users will enjoy these effects enough to give VSCO’s own apps and filters …

Buy a classic Guardian photograph: Loch Tummel, October 2019

In our weekly series of exclusive Guardian print sales we have an autumnal view of Loch Tummel, near Pitlochry in Scotland, by Murdo MacLeod The Guardian photographer Murdo MacLeod recently took a morning drive around Loch Tummel, north-west of Pitlochry, in Perth and Kinross, Scotland – a stunning, narrow freshwater loch surrounded by forest, trails and breathtaking views. “I was on a mission to capture the autumn colours,” he says. “There was a light frost, and a mist loitering in the hollows. It was very still and beautiful.” The trees on the shoreline and the peak above are reflected in the water, framed by silhouetted branches: the perfect autumn scene. Go neon, but go easy | Funmi Fetto

Blocks of bright colours on your lids are nostalgic of the 80s, but the look is perfect for a 2019 update Convention says if you are old enough to remember wearing a trend, you shouldn’t go near it when it comes back round again. Nonsense. It’s about a fresh execution. The 80s-inspired neon eye, as seen at Carolina Herrera, is a case in point. Sidestep nostalgia territory by doing the following: forgo a brush to keep the shape angular but imperfect (try swiping a lipstick bullet across your lids). Go minimal on skin – a light foundation and a dab of highlighter will do – define brows and apply lip balm. There’s your modern, wearable spin on an old-school trend. …

Agile?

Was at a fortune 10 (well 5) when they 'went agile' (kanban). They claimed big boosts in productivity but with no baselines for comparison. In the datacenter we had things pretty well regimented thanks to good design, organization, and automation. Agile added a fairly large meeting overhead compared to what was already there. Throughout it looked like a 'ground and pound' where all that mattered was moving cards as fast as possible. It's possible that the place I was at was just not good at it. Agile seemed like it was aimed mostly at getting rid of waterfall, and neither seemed to fit network engineering. Looking at another place using agile – everything about the place looks good except that; …

Episode 551 – The Goggles Do Nothing

Welcome to another episode of the Arsecast – the Arsenal podcast. On this week’s show I’m joined by Andrew Allen for a good chunk of Arsenal chat, looking back at the Vitoria game, another disappointing performance, Unai Emery’s football and his future, the importance of a win this weekend and more. Then it’s Leicester fan Joe Brewin to take a look at Brendan Rodgers, Jamie Vardy, and the threat they pose to the Gunners this weekend. Finally, some light relief as I chat to the creator of the fantastic Simpsons Arsenal Twitter account, how it got started, some favourite bits and episodes, and more extremely cromulent Simpsons related content. Airbnb plans to verify 100% of its listings after mass shooting, scam allegations

Airbnb has announced plans to verify every single one of its approximately 7 million listings after a mass shooting at an Airbnb in October, alongside several other safety initiatives. The shooting took place at a Halloween party thrown at a California Airbnb, leaving five dead and prompting Airbnb Co-Founder, CEO, and Head of Community Brian Chesky to declare a ban on “party houses”.  Chesky also tweeted about several other safety initiatives, including “expanding manual screening of high-risk reservations” and a “dedicated ‘party house’ rapid response team”, though he was somewhat light on details.  Read more… More about Travel, Airbnb, Safety, Brian Chesky, and Mass Shootings Read more: feeds.mashable.com

Amazon’s own Echo Buds may have revealed a future fitness tracking feature

Amazon’s truly wireless Echo Buds earbuds are excellent for their $130 price, to the point that they were the elephant in the room when we reviewed Apple’s new AirPods Pro. And they managed that resounding feat without one of their biggest rumored features — the ability to double as a fitness tracker and measure the calories you’ve burned. But don’t rule out fitness tracking just yet, because CNBC and The Verge both spotted a new “Fitness” tab in the Echo Buds section of the Alexa app today. You can see a few screenshots from our app below: While we’re waiting on an Amazon spokeperson to confirm whether we should actually be excited for more functionality — or if this just …

Eye Candy: Light and Airy

OhSusquehanna’s beautiful & breezy Ursa It’s gotten quite warm here in Texas, so when looking for Eye Candy this week, I was drawn to things that felt light and airy. While you wouldn’t necessarily think of an aran weight top as being light and airy, CoyCrochet’s My Favorite Tee certainly is! I love how the flowers coordinate so well with the purple top. Maybull’s Step it up Shawl 2 is also a lovely use of purple and seems like a great light weight accessory for any time of year. Lightweight shawls are really what I think of when I think of “light and airy”. Woll-moe-re’s Fugra Shawl 2 is a lovely combination of solid fabric and lace. Nijntjefliegt’s Minarets and …

How a few flaky elevator buttons are tearing our office apart

Here at The Verge, we’ve already established our button bona fides. We’ve got a Button of the Month column and a podcast called Why’d You Push That Button?. We track button development, we mourn their passing into oblivion, and we write ballads to the weirdest buttons that humans have invented. So it really stings when buttons screw us over. Exhibit A: the elevator buttons in our building work… some of the time. They seem to ignore about half the people who press them, which can lead to frustrated pileups in the elevators on busy mornings. I’ve been passively observing the situation for weeks, and have watched my building-mates get in arguments with each other, swap conspiracy theories about how the …

Doom creator says games today are “far better than they ever were”

These days, John Romero would rather make you a taco than make you his bitch. As an id co-founder, Romero is best known as one of the principal creators of Doom – and as his Sigil project shows, he hasn’t altogether left the old days behind. Yet even with that in mind, he isn’t lost in nostalgia. In fact, Romero believes games today are better than ever. “Games are incredible nowadays,” Romero says in a recent Reddit AMA. “Far better than they ever were. It’s not just because of graphics, but also because design language has evolved so much. And games keep getting better.” Separately, Romero says that hasn’t necessarily changed with new business models either, as “great games are …
