Mirrored Ceilings and Criss-Crossed Stairwells Give a Chinese Bookstore the Feeling of an M.C. Escher Woodcut

Zhongshuge bookstores, designed by Shangai-based architecture firm X+Living, feature incredible rooms coveted by both book and illusion lovers alike. Each location in this chain of Chinese bookstores has uniquely designed spaces with reflective elements that immerse guests in parallel environments. In the Chongqing branch, criss-crossing staircases and a mirrored ceiling double the room for an effect that seems straight out of an M.C. Escher woodcut. In the Yangzhou location, each book-filled room also features mirrors, but many are found on the floors rather than ceiling. These glassy elements are mean to appear like mirages, a reference to the city’s canals, rivers, and lakes. You can take a quick peek inside the Yangzhou-based location in the video by Great Big Story …

Bitcoin’s price is rallying, surpassing the $8,000 for the first time this year. According to CoinMarketCap, the digital currency last stood at around $8,000 in July last year. It comes after the world’s most famous cryptocurrency reached a new yearly high, pushing past $5,600 earlier this month. It’s difficult to ascertain what has caused Bitcoin‘s price to surge in recent weeks, but as always speculation has been rife. Just yesterday, Hard Fork reported on Bitcoin‘s upward movements, noting how its recent rise to $7,000 signified the strongest rally over a six-week period since the famous bull-run in 2017. 3D Printer CNC Makes 3D Illusion Pattern

This is how I modified the Creality CR-10 to an engraving tool! By using a small electric motor and a PWM controller attached to a 3D printer makes you able to create incredible 3D illusion patterns. I designed a motor mount which I 3D printed and after connecting the electronics the 3D printer was ready to be used as a CNC. I also 3D printed a base in which a sheet of acrylic was placed. With a strip of RGB LED lights the acrylic was illuminated and the engraved pattern would light up! Why notification sounds send you emotionally reeling into the past

It sounds like someone accidentally hit adjacent keys on a xylophone. The understated double ping hits me with a jolt of excitement, a swooping stomach, and even a bit of relief. Whenever I hear the now-retired Facebook Messenger notification, I’m transported back to 2013, when I happily, gratefully, giddily got a message from someone I liked, who would later become my partner. Back then, we talked almost daily on, of all chat platforms, Messenger. As devices, software applications, and apps become omnipresent, the User Interface (UI) sounds they emit — the pings, bings, and blongs vying for our attention — have also started to contribute to the sonic fabric of our lives. And just as a song has the power …

Easy Gutter Fixes You Can DIY

Loose GuttersYears ago, spikes and ferrules were a common method for hanging gutters. They do the job all right, but eventually the spikes work themselves loose. Pounding them back in is a temporary fix at best. One way to make sure your gutter doesn’t fall off the house is to install fascia hanger brackets. Installation is simple: Just hook the bracket under the front lip of the gutter, and then screw the other side of the bracket to the fascia. Leave the old spikes in place—a spike head looks better than a hole in the gutter. If your shingles overhang your fascia by a few inches or you have steel roofing, buy the brackets with the screws built in (the …

The show garnered attention when it first …

HTC isn’t dead yet, promises Android 9 updates this month

You’d be forgiven for writing off HTC’s smartphone business as over. The Pixel 3A that Google just released was developed by its Taiwan team, which Google acquihired from HTC over a year ago, and HTC itself has been quiet about new flagships since last summer’s U12 Plus. Well, HTC has shown some small signs of life this week by announcing its release schedule for the overdue updates to Android 9 Pie. The HTC U11 will be updated first, around the end of May, to be followed by the U12 Plus in June, and the U11 Plus starting at the end of June. Owners of other HTC phones are likely out of luck. There was once a time when HTC was …
