HBO’s award-winning Big Little Lies is streaming free on YouTube all weekend

Weekends are made for spending time with family, taking in the great outdoors and, if you’re like me, spending time on the couch binging good television series. HBO has made that last option even better, making the entire first season of Big Little Lies available to watch for free on YouTube this weekend. Big Little Lies, a miniseries based on a book of the same name, follows a group of close-knit friends in Monterey Bay, California as secrets unravel and deadly incidents occur. When a murder takes place, everyone in town becomes suspect. As more information comes to light, it’s clear the circumstances surrounding the suspicious death are more dire than first thought. The show garnered attention when it first …

HTC isn’t dead yet, promises Android 9 updates this month

You’d be forgiven for writing off HTC’s smartphone business as over. The Pixel 3A that Google just released was developed by its Taiwan team, which Google acquihired from HTC over a year ago, and HTC itself has been quiet about new flagships since last summer’s U12 Plus. Well, HTC has shown some small signs of life this week by announcing its release schedule for the overdue updates to Android 9 Pie. The HTC U11 will be updated first, around the end of May, to be followed by the U12 Plus in June, and the U11 Plus starting at the end of June. Owners of other HTC phones are likely out of luck. There was once a time when HTC was …

Jeff Bezos unveils mock-up of Blue Origin’s lunar lander Blue Moon

Today, Jeff Bezos unveiled the design of his spaceflight company’s lunar lander, the Blue Moon, which can take scientific payloads — and eventually humans — to the surface of the Moon. Bezos said that his company, Blue Origin, has been working on the design for the lander for the last three years. “This is an incredible vehicle, and it’s going to the Moon,” Bezos said after unveiling a mock-up of the Blue Moon lander at the Washington, DC Convention Center. Members of the press and space industry were in attendance to watch the reveal. The event opened with a video from the original Apollo 11 mission, which landed the first astronauts on the surface of the Moon. “If that does …

64-megapixel phone cameras are coming

Samsung has announced a new image sensor for mobile phones with a higher resolution than anything comparable on the market. The ISOCELL Bright GW1 is a 64-megapixel sensor that uses the same 0.8μm-sized pixels as Samsung’s current 48-megapixel component, meaning it’ll be a physically larger sensor that can capture more light overall. The Bright GW1 will produce 16-megapixel images by merging four pixels into one, like how existing 48-megapixel sensors turn out 12-megapixel photos by default. Samsung’s new sensor will also be able to descramble the color filter for full-resolution 64-megapixel shots in good light. Sony’s IMX586 48-megapixel sensor has a similar capability, but Samsung’s doesn’t; today the Korean company is also announcing… Continue reading… Read more: theverge.com

Philips Hue bulbs can now be grouped together in ‘zones’

Philips Hue has been updated today with a new feature that lets you group individual Hue lights and bulbs together as a group — called a “Zone” — making it easier to control larger light setups, via Android Police. The update is available on iOS and Android starting today, and gives Hue the much-needed option to group multiple bulbs together. Hue lights could previously only control bulbs through the company’s app on an individual basis or for the entire room at once, but Zones will allow for both more granular control as well as for controlling groups of lights that are in different rooms. Most importantly, it’ll make having light fixtures with multiple bulbs easier to control together — previously, …

iPhone case makers are betting the giant camera bump leaks are right

We’re still a few months away from Apple’s next iPhone (which will likely launch in September), but rumors are already swirling and case makers, at least, seem to be convinced, based on the latest batch of leaked case renders courtesy of Slashleaks and Sonny Dickson. There isn’t a ton new to see here — renders of an iPhone with a massive square camera module with three triangularly arranged lenses have been floating around for months, but the fact that case makers seem to be willing to hedge their bets on creating actual products around them might give more credence to the fact that this is an actual design. Image: Sonny Dickson Of course, there’s always the possibility that this is …

Sidestepping Apple: the third-party tinkerers fighting for your right to repair

Online repair communities are spreading repair knowledge online to place power back in the hands of consumers When Jessa Jones’s twin daughters flushed her iPhone 4S down the toilet, she decided that she was going to fix it herself. She took the toilet apart in her backyard, retrieved the device, and then searched online for how to make it turn on again. On DIY fix-it forums, she was informed that the first step was to replace the battery. She did this with relative ease, but the phone wouldn’t charge, which suggested that the water had also seeped into the phone’s motherboard. For most, this would mean giving up and going to the Apple store. But Jones was determined. She had …

Brilliant Zippered Change Purse Rock Sculptures That Visually Challenge the Perceived Consistency of Stone

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hirotoshi Ito (@itohirotoshi) on Apr 11, 2019 at 2:04am PDT Japanese artist Hirotoshi Ito creates absolutely brilliant rock sculptures that visually challenge the perceived consistency of the material. In order to achieve this, Ito adds functioning zippers that seemingly reveal the contents kept inside, much in the way coins are held in a change purse. The contents of each “purse” are widely varied and include a toothy smile, hidden machinery, a futuristic garden, handy coffee beans, a hiding pet and a fistful of shiny coins. Ito finds it important that his art has a sense of humor as he comes from a family of stonemasons who specialize in the serious craft …

Volvo’s Polestar 2 with Android Automotive is how all car software should be designed

The native Android Auto saga has a long and winding road, but we’re finally approaching the finish line. Google’s custom-built software for automobiles, now called Android Automotive OS and not to be confused with standard Android Auto mirrored from your smartphone, was first announced a couple of years back as a kind of compromise with an auto industry that realized it could never build software as good as Silicon Valley. It’s taken various forms, as it’s moved from retrofitted Volvo infotainment systems to new, custom screens. And behind closed doors, it’s gone through countless iterations that have never seen the public eye, as Google has done a careful dance letting automakers have some control of the design while it works …

Wacom’s refreshed Intuos Pro Small is a portable drawing tablet for pros

Wacom has announced an updated Intuos Pro Small, a compact, wireless drawing tablet built for portability. The Intuos Pro Small is the last in the Intuos Pro line to get a design refresh; the Medium and Large sizes were relaunched a few years back with slimmer bezels and an updated stylus, the Pro Pen 2, that has 8,192 levels of pressure sensitivity. At $249, the Intuos Pro Small is more affordable than the $379 Medium and $499 Large tablets. The design is nearly identical, too. The only difference with the Intuos Pro Small is that it has two fewer ExpressKeys than the Medium and Large sizes. It also doesn’t offer the ability to swap out texture sheets, which lets artists …

Beige and grey living room with a clean look

The decoration of this living room is simple, yet carefully chosen and fits the space perfectly. The grey and beige color palette works very nicely with the wood of the flooring and the Fritz Hansen ant chairs*. The round table fits nicely in this corner and combines well with the String System* on the wall which has matching beige and grey accessories. The area where the sofa is placed looks even more soft because of the light area rug there and the art prints visually separate both dining and sofa area from each other. I love the low hanging Foscarini Rituals pendant* as well and am looking for a similar piece for above my coffee table. via Bjurfors The post …
